Can You Hear The Mosquitone?

Tuesday June 20, 2006
For some reason, I've always looked younger than my real age. Still today, despite being 38 year old, people think I'm way under 30... but today I'm depressed: I couldn't hear the "Mosquitone", the new blockbuster ringtone only young people can hear.

The Mosquitone -- which sounds like the buzz of a mosquito -- is so hot, especially in England, that it is believed able to disthrone "Crazy Frog", the most popular downloadable ringtone so far. It uses a special high frequency that people over 25 can't hear anymore as the range of hearable frequencies diminishes with age. The Mosquitone revealed my age that looks could hide. Oh well!

  • Hear (Or Try To) The Mosquitone
  • But don't worry if you don't succeed. Grown ups have a much better option anyway with the truly unique and Free ringtones offered here at About.com.

I will be 40 on July 9th: while I wasn’t able to hear the sound playing though my computer’s speakers, I was hit by an idea. I got out my Treo 650, on which I have both a program called Easy Notes which allows voice recordings, and Volume Care, which is a popular sound-boosting program for the Treo, which is rather soft in the volume area. Anyway, I put the Treo next to my computer’s speakers, recorded the sound with Easy Notes, pumped it up with Volume Care, and PRESTO, I COULD hear it…but then, my 8th grade science courses came back to me…that happens to us “old folks”, and I remembered that if this sound was at a specific FREQUENCY, then it shouldn’t matter how loudly I play the sound, it should still be inaudible to me…this tends to make be believe that this is a hoax…then I also recalled that I am often awakened by the sound of a real mosquito buzzing past my ear at 1:00 AM, and I have good enough hearing for it to wake me from a sound sleep, so if I can hear the “real thing”, why should I not…allegedly…be able to hear this sound??

I just turned 40 something and although I had to turn my computer speakers all the way up, I could hear the tone for “Baby ears” It reminds me of an icebox running. Do I Superman hearing or is the ringtone just a come on?

Even now, I can hear the electromagnetic whine of my hard drive, and the fluorescent lights whirring overhead. The only “trick” is that the people in charge are making a mint selling this recording they created at an ultra-low VOLUME (not frequency), that a phone’s internal software will process into something hearable the minute people download it for $1.99 a pop, or whatever the going rate is. Believe me, its a hoax…

Well, at least it is a pleasant sound compared to the obnoxious sound that was on my news channel’s home page, claiming to be able to be heard only by teenagers. :-) I have always been able to hear high frequency sounds. But I have some hearing loss, and, at 53, it seems like I’m getting harder of hearing. Nevertheless, I was fully able to hear the top two Mosquitones without any increase in volume or additional enhancements needed to do so.
