Cell-Phones On WiFi Comming Of Age

Monday August 14, 2006
Skype's initial popularity was responsible for a flock of new handsets that look like home cordless phones but let you call (for free) with Skype, using your home's wireless internet (Wifi). The next step is a merge between Wifi phones and cell phones, commonly known as Generic Access Network (GAN). For example, T-Mobile just launched a beta test where a few users will try that system, using a handset that works both on WiFi and T-Mobile's GSM cellular network.

Provided your cell phone supports GAN (just a few recent models do), T-Mobile could start offering that service as an option on a service plan nationwide this fall. The rate would be significantly lower than that of a monthly landline service. The current beta test is rumored to cost only an additional $5 per month.

I HAVE A LG3200 PHONE. IT IS NICE LITTLE PHONE, EASY TO USE WITH MORE FEATURES THAN I NEED OR KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH. ONLY ONE PROBLEM, DON’T TRY TO USE IT INDOORS. VERIZON TELLS ME THEY DON’T GUARANTEE A SIGNAL IN A BUILDING SUCH AS MY HOUSE OR MY WORK. BUYER BEWARE!

In your article “Cell-Phones On WiFi Comming Of Age,” Comming is misspelled. It is correctly spelled “coming.”
Thank you.
