Sprint Starts To Sell PC Cards For Faster "Revision A" EV-DO

Tuesday August 29, 2006
Sprint announced today the availability of a PC Card compatible with EV-DO "Revision A". However, Sprint hasn't yet started converting its EV-DO network to Revision A but promises to do so in major markets and to cover an area of 40 million people by year end.

The current "basic" EV-DO available at Verizon and Sprint only reaches average download speeds of about 400 Kbps and much slower upload speeds, around 100 kbps. EV-DO Revision A will improve the network with:

  • Faster average download speeds of 450 to 850 Kbps
  • Dramatically more upload speed: around 300 to 400 kbps
  • Reduced "latency" -- the delay between an internet request and the time at which data starts to arrive.
  • Furthermore, Sprint makes one step towards reduced wireless data plans, making its 60$ per month unlimited service available to those willing to be locked in a 2-year contract. Currently, only users with a Sprint voice plan could benefit from that rate. The basic price for unlimited use both at Sprint and Verizon is currently 80$.
