Rumor: Is Dell Planning To Sell Cell Phones?

Thursday March 1, 2007
Now that rumors on the Apple iPhone are over, a new one is picking up speed: The Dell Phone. Dell computers would be planning to sell cell phones. We heard that before but this time, the rumor is fueled by something new: A Motorola executive just left Motorola to start working for Dell -- perhaps to head their cell phones division?

Apple created an iPhone the "Apple way". Would Dell do a Dell Phone the Dell way? According to industry observers, Dell cell phones could be sold directly to consumers and customizable, just like their computers.

Imagine going online and checking your options: 1GB memory instead of 512MB, 3-megapixel camera instead of just 2, or no camera, with or without Bluetooth? Possible, but to a certain extent. Cell phones are small and all components are part of a whole, not making it easy to add and remove things.

Anyway, if there is a Dell phone, it won't launch any time soon. Once that kind of rumor starts, it generally has a long way to go before it becomes real, if it does at all.
