Canadians Can Change Carriers And Bring Their Number Starting Today

Wednesday March 14, 2007
If you live in Canada and want to switch to a new cell phone carrier, you can do so today without loosing your good old phone number that all your contacts know by heart. Canada now has a "number portability" rule, allowing consumers to swtich to a new provider and keep their number. Number portability is already available in the U.S. since November 2003.

Virgin Mobile Canada's Richard Branson celebrated the news today by breaking out of a giant cage suspended by a crane today in Toronto. "Now, they no longer have you locked in", he told the National Post.

If you want to switch, keep in mind that you will still have to get a new phone, pay "setup fees" (though most carriers will waive it if you insist) and sign a new contract.
