Poll Results: 17% Use Text Messaging Mostly To Arrange Sex Encounters

Wednesday May 30, 2007
I thought the phenomenon was marginal: It's past midnight and you receive a text message from someone you know: "Hey, what are you up to?". "Not much", you reply and withing minutes, the two of you hook up for a night to remember.

Like it or not, that's how young adults of the years 2000 are learning to use their cell phones in a creative way. Text messages are ideal: There is no need to reply if you are not available; Participants can reply and arrange an encounter unnoticed while at a party or meeting; And what is more enticing than getting an unexpected erotic message from a friend?

I guess that's why so many respondents chose "To arrange casual sex encounters" as the main thing they use text messaging for in a recent poll conducted on About.com cell phones. Other respondents say they use text messaging mostly... (numbers are after removing the 14% users who just don't use text messaging at all):

  • To communicate with family members (28%)
  • To stay in touch with my various friends (32%)
  • To exchange messages with my lover / spouse (15%)
    (As of May 29th)
