Sprint Customers Will Be Able To Port Their Phone To Another Carrier

Monday October 29, 2007
Yahoo News reported last week that Sprint is planning to let their customers go with their cell phone if they want to, at the end of their contract. Currently, most cell phone operators lock the phones they sell so that they can only be used on their own network. Yet, Sprint cell phones use the same technology than Verizon's and Alltel's (except the Nextel phones) and could theoretically be used on those other networks.

Right now, it's impossible to do so. The cell phones are locked. Sprint's decision would come as a settlement in a class-action lawsuit against them, initiated by customers against Sprint's phone locking policy.

Other similar lawsuits are being conducted, including one against AT&T for locking the iPhone exclusively for use on the AT&T network.
