ABI Research Issues Warning on Everything Plans

Tuesday April 8, 2008

by Shane McGlaun

Over the last several months almost every major cellular service provider has come out with new unlimited plans. These plans sound good for heavy voice and data users. However, I think for most users will find unlimited plans will not really be better for them.

ABI Research has issued a warning to mobile service providers concerning flat rate everything you want plans with voice, data and everything else. According to ABI these flat rate plans put a serious strain on 3G networks and raise challenges for operators.

ABI says that the unlimited data plans will especially have an impact on the network if users download or stream lots of video from sites like YouTube. Backhaul is also reportedly affected as requirements increase. ABI cites reports from two Korean operators that offer video calls and global roaming on WCDMA networks. Reports show that this high demand usage has affected voice quality on the networks.
