First Micro USB Cables Introduced

Wednesday April 9, 2008

by Shane McGlaun

As cell phones get smaller and smaller eventually one of the things holding back how small they can be is the ports required for connecting accessories like headphones and for charging the phones. Currently lots of cell phones charge via USB and while the USB connector used is small, makers foresee a time when it just won’t be small enough.

This is where the Micro USB port enters the market at about half the size of current USB ports on mobile phones. Just like the age old question what comes first, the chicken or the egg, before you can have phones equipped with the new Micro USB cable we actually need to have the cables.

StarTech has announced the first Micro USB cables to hit the market. The cables are currently available in 3, 6 and 10 foot lengths. The cables aren’t cheap though with the 3-foot selling for $19.99, the 6-foot selling for $24.99 and the 10-foot selling for $28.99.
