UK Clears Way for Cell Phone Call on Commercial Flights

Wednesday April 9, 2008

by Shane McGlaun

Here in the U.S. since we have never been able to make mobile phone calls on commercial flights. In fact the FAA nixed the idea of allowing calls on commercial flights again in 2007. While here in America the commercial aircraft is still one of the last places where you can place calls, or be bothered by someone else placing calls the story in the UK is different.

A new ruling will allow British aircraft to provide a service for passengers to place phone calls using their own mobile devices in-flight. The catch is that the on-board base station required to route the mobile calls wouldn’t be turned on until the aircraft reaches around 10,000 feet. The other potential pitfall for flyers in Britain is that the cost of the calls is uncapped and no one has offered concrete pricing at this point. Expect the calls to be expensive for sure.
