VOIP for the iPhone with Fring

Wednesday April 16, 2008

by Shane McGlaun

With the massive popularity of the iPhone there are lots of people who want the device to do more. Since the iPhone has Wi-Fi connectivity one of the things that would be nice to have is VOIP capability to save minutes on your phone plan.

While Apple doesn’t officially support VOIP a company called fring has announced that it has the first VOIP software for the iPhone that also allows users to chat and manage online contacts via Wi-Fi. Fring creates a single list of contacts from all selected Internet communities at login and allows for PC style messaging complete with presence indicators.

The fring software is free to download and use. It all sounds really cool, but there is a catch. Fring says you need an “open” iPhone which would seemingly mean your phone has to be jail broken. This will make many people interested in fring pass. Hopefully the final version of the software won’t have that particular requirement.
