Worldwide Handset Shipments Grew in Q1 Despite Economy
by Shane McGlaun
With the economy in the U.S. down right now many might expect shipments of new cell phones to be down as well. However, according to a recent report it seems that despite the economy worldwide handset shipments are looking good.
According to research firm IDC worldwide handset shipments grew in Q1 2008 despite the slowing economy yin America. IDC says that the traditional drop from shipment during Q4 2007 was seen with a decline of 11.6% from the holiday shopping season. Compared to Q1 2007 handset shipments grew by 14.3% to 291.6 million units.
According to IDC the top five cell phone vendors in the world are Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, LG Electronics, and Sony Ericsson. Nokia has more than twice the market share of second place Samsung. I also find it interesting that the cell phone we hear the most about, the Apple iPhone, didn’t put Apple on the list at all.
