37% of Gen Y Drivers Admit to Driving and Texting

Friday May 2, 2008

by Shane McGlaun

I seriously doubt that I am the only one disturbed by the fact that NASCAR and Virginia officials have to warn teens in the area to not drive and text at the same time. It seems like not driving and trying to text at the same time would be sort of a no brainer. Then again the last few times I have been out early in the morning I have seen several women putting on makeup and some people reading the paper and driving.

Nationwide Insurance, NASCAR drivers Clint Bowyer and Landon Cassil, DRIVE SMART Virginia, the Virginia state police and more are trying to raise teen awareness of driving while distracted. A NASCAR driving simulator is being used to allow teens to try and drive and text at the same time and get an idea of how much it affects their driving.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says distracted drivers account for nearly 4 out of 5 crashes in America. A recent study showed that a third of generation Y-ers admit to multitasking while driving and 37% admit to texting and driving.
