OnStar Now Offers Stolen Vehicle Slowdown

Monday May 5, 2008

by Shane McGlaun

OnStar has a new service for subscribers that opt into using it. The service works in conjunction with the OnStar cellular service built into some vehicles. The service is called Stolen Vehicle Slowdown (SVS) and allows OnStar to slow down a vehicle that is stolen and under pursuit by police.

OnStar says that to ensure proper use of SVS that not only must OnStar customers opt-in to the service, but a police report must be on file with the police and that the police must be trailing the vehicle to confirm to OnStar conditions are safe to activate slow down.

The idea behind this service is that if your car is stolen OnStar can now not only use its cellular and GPS technology in vehicles to help police find your car, but it can now help police apprehend the criminals remotely. Vehicles involved in high-speed chases can be slowed and reduce the risk to other motorists and police.
