With so much cutthroat competition in the world of cell phones, standing out in the sea of so many requires something novel.

Oftentimes the “innovation” really isn’t a game-changing “killer app,” but every now and then, an iPhone-like device knocks us flat on our faces in awe.

The Sony Ericsson W580i Walkman has some of this built-in revolution in its ability to be an effective “fitness phone”.

Along with enabling your talking, so does the W580i monitor your walking and running. Unfortunately, Sony Ericsson didn’t realize the true revolution in this feature and instead downplays its core differentiation.

This is the only SONY product that has no positive qualities, except it’s a slider. It is virtually impossible to make a call while driving(maybe all phones should be this way. The first 580i, was replaced because it had so many problems. the second one, although it hasn’t locked up as much, as in, having to take the battery out to reset it, I have intermittent trouble and have gone back to my previous Samsung where I just push a button and say “call so and so”. The 580i Walkman feature comes on at the most impromptu moments. I was told to download software to fix problems and it did fix some. The software that yo need with this phone is so unfriendly, and the repair software took 3 times before my computer would download it. A complete waste of time money and effort. However, the approximately twenty something other SONY products I have had; all excellent.

I bought a refurbished phone. It worked fine for about a week, then began to repeatedly lock up and give messages that the it did not recognize the SIM card. Removing the battery was a quick fix, but hard to do because the back cover is difficult to remove and replace. I returned it for a new one instead of a refurb. Hope it does better.
