That figure is based on an analysis of the costs of the various iPhone components, including the display, semiconductor, and camera.
Don't think that Apple is only making $26 off each iPhone it sells, though: AT&T is actually paying Apple as much as $325 for each iPhone sold, according to an analyst with Oppenheimer & Co. Paying that subsidy is worth it for AT&T, as the company gains new customers--ones who pay AT&T for the voice and data service on their iPhone each month.
