Thinking about buying an iPhone 3G? Soon, you'll be able to do so at Best Buy. The electronics retailer has announced that it will begin selling the smartphone on September 7, making it the first authorized retailer other than Apple or AT&T.
What does this news mean for you? It won't mean a price cut: Best Buy says it will sell the 8GB iPhone 3G for $199 and the 16GB iPhone 3G for $299. You'll still need to get the phone activated in the store and you'll still need to sign a two-year contract with AT&T.
What you may find at Best Buy, though, is help from a staff that's increasingly knowledgeable about smartphones. Over the past two years, Best Buy has ramped up its interest in smartphones, adding what it calls "Best Buy Mobile" departments to its stores. The retailer requires that all of the Best Buy Mobile staff is trained in "mobile phone technology and trends."
You'll also find a vast selection of handsets from a variety of cellular carriers. Best Buy says that it offers as many as 95 different handsets from 9 different carriers. That's certainly more options than you'll find at your local AT&T store. You may walk in expecting to buy an iPhone, but walk out with something else altogether.
