Verizon's Pricier Data Plans

From Liane Cassavoy, About.com GuideNovember 3, 2008

Using a Verizon Wireless smartphone is about to get a little bit more expensive. As of November 14, Verizon will require a $30-per-month (or higher) data plan on all smartphones it sells, according to reports by Engadget and Gizmodo.

If you currently have a Verizon smartphone and use one of the carrierÂ's existing (and cheaper) plans, you wonÂ't be forced to upgrade, the reports say. But if you purchase a new phone or upgrade your current model, you can expect your monthly bill to go up.

Both sites also are reporting that, sometime next year, Verizon will also require a subscription to a data plan with any of its phones that feature full HTML browsers. This means that the price of owning a phone like the LG Dare or the LG VoyagerÂ--which currently donÂ't require a full-blown data planÂ--will increase, too.
