MOTO W233 Renew: Motorola to Unveil at CES World’s First Cell Phone Made From Recycled Water Bottle Plastics

Wednesday January 7, 2009
With the 2009 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in full effect from Jan. 8, 2009 to Jan. 11, 2009, we’re bound to be dazzled by a wide array of high-tech gadgetry where the action is in Las Vegas as well as around the world from the ripple effect of what goes down there.

Here’s an early reveal of one cell phone that Motorola will be unveiling this week at CES: the world’s first cell phone crafted from recycled water bottle plastics. It’s called the MOTO W233 Renew.

On one hand, advocates to go green are pushing for the obliteration of plastic water bottles in favor of metal ones (like the SIGG). On the other, what a novel concept it is to make a product such as a cell phone out of recycled ones.

But what about quality? At this time, Motorola just says the Renew comes with “uncompromised quality”. That said, the jury’s still out on that as it hasn’t yet been given the journalist street test.

With the Renew, Motorola is also claiming the title of the “world’s first carbon-neutral phone”. Motorola says it has offset the carbon dioxide required to make, distribute and operate the Renew through CarbonFund.org investments in renewable energy and reforestation.

Motorola even went green with the Renew all the way down to its packaging. It says it cut the packaging size of the Renew by 22 percent and the box and all materials inside are printed on 100 percent post-consumer recycled paper.

As is becoming more popular by the day, a postage-paid recycling envelope is included in the Renew’s box so consumers can easily recycle a previous cell phone at no cost. The renew will be sold by T-Mobile in the first quarter of 2009.

The price, though, isn’t yet public. A Motorola spokeswoman says it’ll be “very affordable”. Read my 13 tips to turn your cell phone green here and about green cell phone carriers here.

I love the sound of this! While I think it’s great that people are being encouraged not to buy water in plastic bottles, there are still (literally) tons of them around so seeing a company make a product like this out of it is great news.

I bought this phone for $30 to tide me over because I broke my “good” phone…it does a perfectly fine job…
