Looking to sync your Palm Pre smartphone with Apple's iTunes software? You're back in business. Palm has released an update to the Pre's webOS -- version 1.1 -- which allows the Pre to sync with iTunes again.
Palm announced the update on its Official Blog. The posting listed several new features found in the update, including various security enhancements. Near the end of the post, the news about iTunes syncing was slipped in: "Oh, and one more thing: Palm webOS 1.1 re-enables Palm media sync. ThatÂ's right -- you once again can have seamless access to your music, photos and videos from the current version of iTunes (8.2.1)."
iTunes 8.2.1, which Apple released last week, was the software that revoked the Pre's syncing capabilities. The Pre had been able to sync with earlier versions of iTunes, which recognized Palm's smartphone as an iPod. Palm touted this capability when marketing the Pre, a move that clearly irritated Apple. Last month, Apple warned that it could pull the plug on the Pre's iTunes syncing at any time. Last week, the company followed through on those threats.
Palm, however, wasn't ready to give up. I don't know what the company did to its OS to make it work with iTunes again, but apparently, they've succeeded. But for how long? Will Apple fight back, and cut the Pre off from iTunes once again? Or will they give up, and simply let Pre owners use their software? I hope so. But I'm not optimistic.
