In direct competition with prepaid wireless leaders Boost Mobile, Cricket Wireless and MetroPCS, nationwide pay-as-you-go carrier PlatinumTel on Tuesday announced its new $50 unlimited voice and texting plan with 100 megabytes of high-speed 3G monthly data.

While the new PlatinumTel plan is half the price of Sprint’s $100 Simply Everything all-unlimited plan, the all-unlimited Boost Mobile plan is superior with unlimited voice and texting and the key difference of unlimited data all for $50 per month.

Like Boost Mobile and cell phone carriers like it, Chicago-based PlatinumTel doesn’t require a cell phone contract. While prepaid carrier Cricket Wireless offers unlimited talk, texting and data for $45 a month, it doesn’t include nationwide roaming. PlatinumTel does.

Virgin Mobile also has an unlimited plan for $50 a month with no contract or roaming fees, but that plan doesn’t include data or texting.

The carrier’s announcement on Monday cited a new cell phone report from the Citizen’s Utility Board (CUB) showing that 73 percent of cell phone users could save $300 or more per year. CUB recommended prepaid plans as an alternative to overpaying for wireless service.

For a prepaid monthly price comparison, see this visual matrix from PlatinumTel.

Update on Sept. 8, 2009: PlatinumTel has added an unlimited-data option for $10 more per month that can be bolted onto this $50 unlimited voice and texting plan.

Your not lying girl. I had Ptel for the last 6 years and tried Cricket and Boost service a few months ago and regretted it. Their service is nowhere near as good as my Ptel. I love you guys too. And you too kyla ;-) ,

I’m with you guys and girls. I never heard or had Platinumtel before earlier this year. I went from t-mobile to metropcs and then boost and was miserable with all three. Stumbled onto platinumtel by accident but so happy I did. Platinumtel has way better service. Thank god you guys are in New York now.

Just curious: When you three say PlatinumTel is better, what are the factors determining that for you?

They operate off of the sprint network so they have more and better coverage as well as much more reliability. Virgin operates off of the sprint network too, but my Ptel has been with me a long time. I’m sure there is a lot of good deals out there, but Ptel been around a long time. There doing right by me ;-)

When I say better, I mean better and cheaper. My t-mobile was more expensive, my metropcs worked horribly, and my boost worked when it wanted to work. I never heard of platinumtel until this year, so hopefully they stick around.

What I don’t like about platinum tel is that they don’t block other service like 411, which cost extra. They should block it unless you want it on your account, that would be easier to manage.

Never heard of them before. Are they only available in some regions? @Ty, it’s the first time I’ve heard that someone says Sprint gives better coverage with more reliability. ;-)

I used Virgin a while ago and was very disappointed with the coverage in general but it was the dropped calls which eventually made me switch. I never even tried Boost because I knew they were on the same network.
Eventually ended up with NET10 as provider which I’m very happy with atm.

Never heard of those guys.

I got Straight Talk and pay $45 a month for unlimited talk and text over the Verizon network.

I liked the way you people review mobile phones and other gadgets. I have tried to check the truth in your articles and found the truth for myself. Every point that you mention is just prefect.

Keep up the good work.

My first order was billed to my AMEX card but failed to process. After a week this was fixed and my Mastercard order went through. I got the phone and the minute card in the mail about a week later. The phone didn’t have a battery. I only purchased the phone for a vacation and could not use it because of the battery delay. They promised to overnight the battery, which took 9 days to travel the approximately 300 miles to my home. Since I no longer needed the phone I called and asked for a refund. I was put in touch with a manager who said she would mail me a return label so I could return the unused phone and card. That was almost 8 weeks ago. I have called and emailed about 10 times. I was last told a week ago they were mailing my label.

They are located in the US, had good reviews and good prices. I was excited to support this US company. I find the customer service to be absolutely horrendous. Since they have my money they have no care to process my refund. I am filing a grievance with the BBB.
