PlatinumTel is expanding. The carrier announced on Oct. 2, 2009 the launch of its prepaid wireless service in New York City.

PlatinumTel is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), which means it doesn't have its own radio spectrum or network infrastructure. Instead, it uses Sprint's network.

The carrier says its "coverage is not available everywhere and varies based on a number of factors". The carrier's coverage map shows stronger penetration in the center of the U.S. with excellent service in the northeast.

Its weakest service is in the U.S. just west of Kansas. PlatinumTel has almost no coverage in Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming and Montana.

Its prepaid wireless and pay-as-you-go plans compete with Boost Mobile, Cricket, Virgin Mobile, Jitterbug, Straight Talk and MetroPCS.

PlatinumTel has an unlimited voice and texting plan for $50 per month along with a pay-as-you-go plan with minutes as low as 6.7 cents.

The carrier also has a hybrid plan with à-la-carte pricing for the mobile Web and texting, various text messaging add-on options and international rates as low as 2 cents per minute.

All plans come with no contract. Learn about the prepaid wireless PlatinumTel plans in this compilation! You can also learn about primarily contract-based plans at T-Mobile, Sprint and AT&T.
