If you own the T-Mobile G1, you may be lusting after the newer, cooler Android-based smartphones that have debuted in the year since the G1 was launched. And you may be thinking about ditching your G1 for one of those handsets, like the myTouch 3G. Or the HTC Hero. Or the Motorola Droid.
But you just might want to hold on to your G1 a little bit longer: AndroidSPIN is reporting that T-Mobile G1 phones soon will be upgraded to version 2 of the Android operating system. The report says,"the update will be at least Android 2.0 but more likely Android 2.0.1 as both versions have already been prepared as OTA [over-the-air] updates."
AndroidSPIN's report is based on a tip from an anonymous source, so it can't be verified. But an upgrade to version 2 of the Android operating system would be a huge boon for users of the G1. It would mean access to the excellent Google Maps Navigation application, among others. Right now, the Motorola Droid is the only smartphone that runs Android version 2.0.

Google maps navigation works with Android 1.6 which has been pushed OTA to the G1.
Not sure how they are going to do it, cause the os requires more memory than the G1 can deliver…I guess they will just give as many pieces as possible like they did with the google maps navigation, and when they can’t give anymore, then call it 2.0 modified.
they can cut out some things of the 2.0 andriod build by removing things that the g1 handset dosn’t come with like photo flash that might just lower the over all size of the os
I’ve got a T-mobile G1 handset and I can pretty much say that the internet on the phone looks very good and professional. But the video recording and playback quality on it is very bad! and needs to be upgraded. There’s no flashplayer on the phone so we can’t watch any flash movies on any website with the phone. Playing games on a website: miniclip.com on the phone is not working.
Please upgrade the G1 Android people!
Here are my impressions about T- mobile G1 phone:-
G1 slide out QWERTY keyboard, support for the fast 3G networks, GPS and Bluetooth technology, offers a number of free apps through Android Market and much more. The compass mode works absolutely well, spin it in any direction it will move fine.
The phone of my dreams, I have it for a while now and it is still in really good condition.
I just got an update tonight and it is still 1.6 firmware. Not sure what was updated…hoping someone can fill me in.
