Google announced yesterday that it is rolling out a software update to the Nexus One that is designed to add new features to the smartphone and fix some problems that users have been experiencing with the handset.
The update will add "pinch-to-zoom" functionality in the phone's browser, photo gallery, and maps applications, Google says. That means that users will be able to take advantage of the multi-touch capability that the Nexus One offers, but was previously not activated.
Users also will see an updated version of Google Maps, which will add the following enhancements: the ability to synchronize some searches with your computer; search suggestions based on your search history; and a night mode that changes the appearance of the screen when you're using it at night.
In addition, the Google Goggles visual search app will now be automatically installed on the Nexus One phone. Previously, users had to download it from the Android Market.
Google also says that the software update "will provide a general fix to help improve 3G connectivity on some Nexus One phones," but did not provide any more details on how the fix will work. Since the Nexus One's launch last month, many users have reported problems either obtaining or maintaining a 3G connection with the phone.
Google says that Nexus One users will see a message on their phone's notification bar when the update is available to download.
