The rumors that Apple is working on a version of the iPhone that will run on the Verizon Wireless network are back -- with a vengeance. A new report in the Wall Street Journal says that Apple is working on two new versions of the iPhone, one of which is likely to end up on Verizon Wireless.
The new iPhone would run on the CDMA network, which is used by both Verizon Wireless and Sprint -- not the GSM network that the iPhone's current carrier, AT&T uses, the WSJ report says. It also says that the Verizon Wireless-compatible iPhone would likely begin mass production in September. The paper quotes people "briefed" by Apple as the basis for its report.
The report also notes that Apple is working on a new version of its iPhone for GSM networks, so AT&T users would conceivably have a new handset option as well. "The model is likely to be thinner and have a faster processor, two people familiar with the device said," the WSJ report says.
This is not the first time rumors have surfaced that the iPhone would head to Verizon Wireless; these rumors seem to gain interest several times each year. Whether this new report is more credible than past rumors remains to be seen, as neither Apple nor Verizon Wireless is commenting.
