Jabra Earboom Winder

The Jabra Earboom Winder
Guide Rating -
Pros  • The winder system
• small and easy to carry around
Cons  • Disappointing sound quality.
• "Eargel" dropped too easily from my ear
• Wire between winder unit and phone is too short
The Bottom Line - A full-featured multi-purpose earset.

"A revolution with some flaws"
I was very enthusiast when I unpacked the Jabra Earboom Winder. The concept is great: along with Motorola, who has a similar product, Jabra offers that solution for those who like handsfree earsets but hate figting with the wires: a winder system that clips to your belt.

Super idea, but only half of a great product. Pull the earset and it unrolls just like a vacuum cleaner power cord. Press a small button and it rolls back inside so that, when not in use, all you have to carry is a small 1.5 square inches box. Very convenient.

The problem, however, is that the Jabra Earboom Winder just doesn't have a good sound input. The stick-mounted microphone with a protecting foam, for some reason, produces a marshmallow sound for the person on the other end. In my Earset Sound Quality Test, the Earboom Winder scored 7th... out of 7 candidates. A disappointing product from a company that made the very very good "Jabra Earwrap", probably one of the best handsfree earsets on the market today.

Another annoyance was the Eargels: exclusive to Jabra, these rubber earpieces are shaped to hook inside the pavilion of the ear. It does stay in place relatively well, but it drops almost every time you touch the wire, an annoying situation for me. That kind of thing makes me focus constantly on it and obsessively wonder: "Will it drop? will it drop?"

If wires really annoy you that much, perhaps you should consider the new wireless earsets appearing on the market. Some rare models are already available for the Ericsson T28 and one other, for all phones with a 2.5mm jack, manufactured by DPP Innovations. I haven't tried them yet though, but at least, there are no wires.
