"A good mainstream phone"
Apart from it's 4 levels grayscale display and GPS-readiness, there's nothing quite special about the A400. It is well built, lightweight, nice looking and has a large display. It supports downloadable ringtones and graphics but only through the Sprint PCS paid "Ringers & More" service, which limits your possibilities. I liked using the A400, especially for its nice design, but the not-so-special side of that phone makes it a basic choice for those with basic needs. The GPS function will let you get location-based information and help emergency services locate you if you call 911 but can't tell where you are. Later this year, Sprint PCS will launch the A460, a similar phone, but with an external LCD display and 1xRTT capability, the 3rd generation cellular technology that allows for faster data transfer speeds.
