Direct ringtone and graphic transfer by infrared
Activating infrared on your cell phone

This step-by-step tutorials explain how to transfer a ringtone (or a graphic, the method is similar) from your infrared-equipped computer (most laptops are) to your infrared-equipped cell phone. For safety reasons, infrared isn't activated by default on most phones so the first step is to activate infrared, also known as "IrDA".

(This example uses the Siemens SL56 cell phone with a Windows XP computer. The procedure for other phones may vary but should be quite similar.)

Main Settings:
_

This example: Go to the main settings menu item.

Other phones: Idem in most cases.

Connectivity:
_

This example: Go to the connectivity sub-menu.

Other phones: Other phones may not have that sub-menu and offer directly an infrared sub-menu.

Infrared/IrDA:
_

This example: Select "IrDA" and make sure it is checked and return to the main screen by pressing the "hang-up" key several times.

Other phones: Other phones will rather refeer to "infrared" (IrDA is just an infrared synonym) and offer you to either turn infrared on permanently or only for 10 minutes, then turn it back off. It's up to you, but make sure it will still be on when you need it.
