The stand-by time of a phone represent its maximum battery life when not in use for a conversation.

There's a catch:
Talk Time and stand by time are usually for digital use. Since an analog network typically uses much more battery power, the actual talk time and stand-by time of your phone will be significantly lower when in analog areas (usually, rural areas).
