Use your phone's Cost Control feature
Most modern phones have a set of functions called "Cost Control" and if you don't use it, you're passing on a great opportunity to manage your monthly minute allowance. Depending on the settings you choose, cost control will beep every minute; warn you when you are roaming or simply add up your used minutes so you can check anytime how many unused minutes are available.

Visit my cell phone buyer's guide for a listing of phones that support that function or use my links to manufacturers where you can find user's manuals and instructions about how to use cost control.

Know your calling habits
Do you mainly use your phone during the day or on evenings? Then maybe a "unlimited evenings & weekend plan" would be better. Also, if you travel mainly from setpember to april and spend your summers in your hometown, it would be a good idea to alternate between a national flat-rate plan and a low-cost local basic plan. Most providers allow you to switch from one plan to another at least once or twice a year.

Use my links to cellular service providers to review your provider's policy and other service plans.
