AT&T released a software update for the BlackBerry Torch shortly after they launched the device. The package version of the update is 6.0.0.695, and provides fixes to many of the OS issues that BlackBerry Torch owners have been dealing with since purchasing their devices.

The update is available via download from the AT&T BlackBerry Downloads site, but you can also download and install it Over The Air (OTA). To perform the download OTA, open the Options menu, choose Device, and then choose Software Updates. Your BlackBerry will search for the updates available from your carrier.

If you plan to do an OTA update, please note that it may take up to two hours for the update process to complete. Your BlackBerry will download the update and reboot itself several times during the process. Before you start, backup all of your data, and plug in your charger. Follow all of the instructions you are given during the update process carefully. If you are on a capped data plan, please keep in mind that OTA software updates may be quite large, and may result in you exceeding your quota.

After installing the update, we noticed several improvements including:

  • Vastly improved scrolling speed.
  • Fewer OS freezes and pauses when moving from screen to screen or application to application.
  • The desktop no longer reverts to the original wallpaper after every reboot.
  • Touchscreen is much more responsive.

It is highly recommended to keep your BlackBerry OS and all applications on your device up to date. OS and application updates not only fix bugs, but can also patch security issues. The easiest way to keep your data safe is to keep your BlackBerry updated and perform regular backups.
