Sanyo M1

Sanyo M1

Sanyo

The Bottom Line

I would keep the Sanyo M1 in a heartbeat. Not everything is perfect about it but basics are good: sound quality, speakerphone and other strong features make it a no-brainer choice for average to almost-power-users.
Pros
  • Clearly above average sound quality
  • Stays firmly in landscape position for Sprint TV viewing
  • Multitask Music player lets you browse menus while listening
Cons
  • Keypad is just average, could be better on such a big phone
  • Call screening function needs improvements
  • Many menu items are not numbered

Description

  • Technology: CDMA
  • Clamshell lightweight form factor
  • 2-Megapixel camera and 1GB of built-in storage

Guide Review - Sanyo M1 Review

The Sanyo M1 was meant for multimedia use: 2-megapixel camera with auto-focus, 1GB of built-in memory with USB Mass Storage profile (you can connect it to your computer and add or remove files to it just like with a memory card), external music controls and a strong focus put on Sprint TV. The M1 design is quite square but with a purpose: You can open the flip, start a mobile TV program in landscape mode and rest it firmly on its side. However, the "live TV" offered by Sprint is very limited, mostly to news stations and learning channels. Also, the display is nice but a bit small for a phone that is so media-oriented.

The 2-megapixel camera with auto-focus provides better than average pictures and transfering them to your computer is a breeze with the included USB cable. Especially that the USB cable also recharges the M1's battery, so you can keep it hooked for hours. Activate the "call screening" feature and your calling parties can hear a message asking "Who is calling?" and then leave their name, letting you choose to answer or not. However, their messages get recorded in the phone's memory and eventually fill it up. Plus, the phone does not play their name out loud, making it more or less useful. Sound quality is very good, at any volume and so is the speakerphone, with a dedicated speakerphone key, a Sanyo trademark.

MP3, movies, pictures and more can be easily uploaded to the phone but Sprint seems to have blocked uploaded MP3's from being used as a ringtone, you will have to use their paid service. Note that the 1GB of memory is only for photos and content uploaded from your computer. Paid-for content is treated separately and limited to 40MB.
