Of course it is possible. In fact, most of today's phones combine a phone and a messaging device but owners are often unaware of that feature. It is called SMS for Short Message Service and it allows you to receive text messages sent by friends or colleagues usually from the network operator's web site or from another phone. In most cases too, phones will also let you reply to an SMS messages. This is called two-way SMS.
